Her Story, Her Dream

▲ Xiaomei’s mom was reading bedtime stories to her.

Xiaomei, 6 year-old, had been on cleft lip and palate repairs. Both of the surgeries were done by mission teams organized by the western. To Xiaomei families’ disappointment, the results were not very good. Xiaomei’s familes understand it is a long long way to go on Xiaomei’s cleft treatments. It takes regular follow up until Xiaomei is 18 years old. Xiaomei’s dad insists that no matter what their families would always support Xiaomei going through these treatments.

Xiaomei is the one and only daughter in her family. During the daytime, Xiaomei stays at kindergarten. It seems that kids from the kindergarten are going very well with Xiaomei, kids can’t tell any big different from Xiaomei. But as it comes to speak up in class, Xiaomei would always feel uncomfortable due to her unclear speech. Xiaome’s dad read about our cleft mission from the newspaper and immediately rushed to the hospital for registration. He hopes that Xiaomei would be able to have speech surgeries and restore her normal speech.

Children with clefts age under 6 are allowed to have free surgeries in Vietnam. However, lack of medical resources and information, not everyone is able to have access to these treatments. Xiaomei’s dad said that their family would try their best to support Xiaomei on these treatments.

After the surgery, Xiaomei was taken to the Recovery Room. Xiaomei wa screaming and crying due to the consciousness of sore but gradually fell into sleep because of the tiredness. Xiaomei’s mom stays with her, reading Xiaomei’s favorite stories. Next day on the Gratitute Party, Xiaomei was happily jumping and dancing. We look at her and hope that one day it would be Xiaomei who clearly read the bedtime stories to her mom.
