His Story Will Bring Tears to Your Eyes

Dr. Yang Xuecai was a NCF fellow from China. In 2005, Dr. Yang came to Taiwan for cleft treatment training. He is now a surgeon at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University. Early of this September, we got an email from Dr. Yang.

"In 2012, the weather became colder as it was getting closer to the season of Chinese New Year. The street was paved with thick snow as a result of the freezing temperature.

I was on my business trip in Pingdu Ming Village. Walking on the street in the village, I didn’t realize there was someone behind me. Suddenly, as I turned around I was completely stunned by what I saw. A skinny boy with significant cleft lip and palate stood in front of me. The clothes he wore were so dirty and terribly worn out. So were his shoes, I could obviously see the holes at the toes of his shoes. The boy stared at me with innocent eyes; his hands couldn’t help but tremble due to the cold. As a result of that, the boy tried to keep himself warm by rubbing his hands against his body. I was too shocked to say anything. After collecting my emotions, I asked the villagers who the cleft kid is. They told me his name - Mengfei. Mengfei was forsaken by his mom at the ages of 4. Since then Mengfei has been raised by his dad who has visual defect.

Since the first time I met Mengfei, I have always kept him in my mind. After coming back from my business trip, I shared with my friends and colleagues about Mengfei’s story. Thankfully, we all had compassion for Mengfei and decided to hold fundraising campaigns for him to get medical treatments and education. As the news were spread out, many people even came to visit Mengfei. Early of this year, Mengfei successfully got his reconstructive surgery. Because of these good things happen to Mengfei, his dad has been gaining faith in everyday lives and became happier. "

Never doubt that a small thing you do can change the world. Together we can make the world better.
